Mark I:

Tora!Tim!Tora!

As a Grandson and I shared use of a Florida swimming pool with a radio, television, computer, and electronics engineer, this author inquired of him: "Sir, I have often pondered upon a certain enigma. Could you offer for me your opinion? Do radio, television, and computers sometimes occur naturally from the arrangement of objects and living things within places on earth and beyond? (Without hesitation, that engineer's answer was: "Yes! Quite often they can and do? I have information that provides evidence to support such theories.)

The story:

Tim Rodgers lived at Five Points, Firetower Road on what now is Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge near Round Oak, Georgia. The year was 1934, and that sixteen-year-old boy was in a house that he shared with his mother, father, and little sister.

The head of that household was away for the day, employed by The Georgia Department Of Conservation. The Mother , a younger sister, and Tim were leading the life of Riley; interacting as would be expected of rural Americans. As they listened to a radio, talked, and complained about heat and humidity, drought conditions, and how they wanted to be more prosperous, they heard an unusual racket coming from outside.

"I'm going outside, Mother, I want to check out what is that noise," Tim said. "I see somebody pulling into the driveway by the firetower. Isn't that a strange looking car? There's a man getting out of that vehicle. He's looking this way. I'll go out and meet him and find out who he is and what he's doing here."

One thing Tim Rodgers didn't know was that he was about to find himself standing face-to-face with someone from another time; a man from the future. And that first encounter was not be a case of one meeting with a time traveler; but the first of a series of incidents that were to continue throughout the lifetimes of Tim Rodgers and the man he met that August day in 1934.

How Jack Monroe, a twenty-eight year old Illinois school teacher managed to drive his jade black 1969 Ford Torino GT into year 1934 remains a mystery difficult to comprehend. During that August 1969, Jack had recently completed his master's degree at Murray State University. Only days remained until a new school term would begin in an Illinois school district not far from Springfield. But on that August day, Jack was driving from Round Oak, Georgia where he was visiting with relatives. He had responded to an urge to return to his childhood home at Five Points, Firetower Road. Somewhere between the two reference points, Jack drove into year 1934- a year that Tim Rodgers and his family were residing there.

Jack Monroe and Tim Rodgers both lived in this house but during different times.

Parking his vehicle in the driveway at Tim's residence, that sixteen-year-old boy approached Jack Monroe. The two introduced each other, shook hands, and exchanged other civil formalities.

Then focusing on Jack's automobile, Tim commented: "That's cerainly an odd looking machine you're driving there. I have never seen or even dreamed of a car like that. It hums and roars. And those tires and that paint! That's an amazing thing to see. We don't have cars like that. What year, make, and model is it?"

"It's a 1969 Ford Torino GT. I bought it about six months ago brand new- a special order," answered Jack Monroe. I'm an Illinois school teacher. My mother, daddy, I, and four sisters lived here from 1945 to 1951. I wanted to visit again one of the places we used to live."

"Then you must be a time traveler," Tim remarked to Jack. "I've read about things like that in books. When were you born?"

Jack's answer was: "I was born on June 3, 1940 near Star Lime Works, Kentucky."

"Then why have you come here into the wrong time? It's 1934." Tim Rodgers inquired. "You're scaring me. You've got to be a real time travel. That's hard for me to handle, knowing that you are.

Jack said: "I'm here to try and save you and our country a lost of trouble, Tim. I don't know if I can or not. But I need to warn all of you that it won't be long before there'll be a war with Japan and Germany. WWII will begin earlier for Europeans, but the Japanese will bring The United States Of America into that war by launching a secret air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. That'll be on December 7, 1941, commencing at 7:30 in the morning. That will be on a Sunday. They'll do us a lot of damage and kill many of our sailors and civilians. I know it will be difficult for you, Tim. The Navy might not be that much fun. But if you could possibly do so, I'd like to ask you to join The United States Navy before December 7, 1940; in time for you to get stationed at Pearl Harbor."

"That's not what I had planned to do. I want to get a job here working with my daddy."

As I said, Tim, the Japanese will sink several of our ships and kill many people, but one key to our defeating the Japanese is our aircraft carriers. The Japanese will have an airplane called "The Zero," and for a long time, it'll be a better plane than America has. Try to get to Pearl Harbor then, and have the aircraft carriers moved to a place they can't be found before the secret attack."

"Will you write that down for me?" asked Tim Rodgers. "I want to remember what you've said to me. I'll try my best to join The United States Navy and get there to Pearl Harbor."

On a leaf of paper taken from a small writing pad, Jack Monroe wrote the following notes: (1)Japanese; (2)Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; (3)December 7, 1941; (4)WWII; (4)Secret attack; (5)Do not leave the aircraft carriers in the harbor; (6) Seven-thirty in the morning; (7)Try and get the Navy commander to heed my warnings.

Prior to re-entry and driving away in his vehicle, Jack and Tim shook hands again. But not before Jack made another gesture as evidence of good will and best of intentions. He placed in the palm of Tim's right hand a 1964 Kennedy half-dollar coin, a Washington quarter-dollar, year 1958, a silver dime with a bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and three brand new, shiny Lincoln pennies with Lincoln Memorial obverse.

Strange indeed is the fact that the encounter in year 1934 did not end Jack Monroe's relationship with Tim Rodgers. It was just the beginning of a quantram that has continued into earth year, 2010.
